Stift Tepla

The Premonstratensian Abbey in Tepla is located in the western part of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. According to a legend, the monastery was founded in 1193. Tepla Abbey experienced an eventful history. The monastery was plundered several times, including during the Thirty Years' War and the Hussite Wars. In the 17th century the monastery was an important center of science, theology and philosophy. In the period of communism after 1945 the monastery and the incorporated parishes were closed. After the fall of the "Iron Curtain" Tepla Monastery was revitalized and opened to the public. The monastery houses a library with rare, handwritten books. The monastery also has much to offer architecturally. Beautiful ceiling paintings adorn the monastery church. A guided tour of the magnificent estate lasts about 45 minutes and is available year-round.
