Wiener Staatsoper

The Vienna State Opera, with 1,709 seats, was built between 1861 and 1869 according to plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg. Eduard van der Nüll was responsible for the interior design. Many other renowned artists contributed to the design of the State Opera. Today, the State Opera is one of the leading opera houses in the world.

World-class artists and conductors continue to make guest appearances at the State Opera. Herbert von Karajan, during his tenure, introduced that all performances are presented in the original language. The State Opera gave rise to its ensembles, such as the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Vienna State Ballet and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. The Vienna State Opera has a special significance because the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are recruited from this orchestra. For many decades, the house has also been the venue for the Vienna State Ballet. The internationally renowned Vienna Opera Ball takes place during the carnival season every year.
